Benicar is an oral high blood pressure treatment. More specifically, it is a brand name prescription hypertension medication. It is typically prescribed to adults but can also be prescribed to children who are at least six years of age.

How Benicar Works to Lower Blood Pressure

Benicar contains the active ingredient Olmesartan. This medication belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs). It works to relax blood vessels so that blood can flow more easily.

Lowering blood pressure in individuals with hypertension can help to prevent kidney problems, heart attacks and strokes.

Precautions to Consider

Benicar is not safe for just anyone with hypertension to use. It is important to tell your doctor if you have any allergies. This is important as you may be allergic to the active or inactive ingredients contained in this product.

Furthermore, it is important to relay your medical history to your healthcare provider. This medication may not be right for you if you currently have existing medical conditions such as liver disease, kidney disease or if you suffer from dehydration (severe loss of body water and minerals).

Moreover, this medication could increase your potassium levels and it may also make you dizzy. Consuming alcohol or consuming/smoking marijuana can make you dizzier. It is important to avoid or reduce your intake of these substances while taking Benicar. Additionally, you should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery until your alertness has returned.

Olmesartan Side Effects

You may experience adverse effects when taking Benicar. Common side effects associated with Olmesartan include:

  • Dizziness
  • Lightheadedness

These effects often disappear once your body has adjusted to the medication. For this reason, it is recommended that you get up slowly when rising from a sitting or lying position. That being said, if those effects persist or worsen or your experience any other side effects, inform your doctor immediately.

Additionally, in some cases, serious side effects may occur, such as:

  • Fainting
  • Severe/persistent diarrhea
  • Muscle weakness, slow/irregular heartbeat (signs of high potassium blood level)
  • Change in the amount of urine (sign of kidney problem)

Tell your doctor right away if you notice any of those symptoms.

To reduce your risk of side effects, it is important to take this medication exactly as it has been prescribed. Do not stop taking this medication or alter your dosage without first consulting your doctor.

Furthermore, be sure to inform your doctor about any health conditions you may have or if you are taking any medications or supplements, before taking Benicar.
